Allies at odds over US request for NATO to counter China

WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) — Secretary of State Anthony Blinken made a weighty request of NATO this week when he called on the members of the military bloc to join the United States in countering China’s “aggressive and coercive actions.”

“The challenges that once seemed half a world away are no longer remote,” Blinken said Wednesday in a speech at NATO headquarters. “There’s no question that Beijing’s coercive behavior threatens our collective security and prosperity, and that it is actively working to undercut the rules of the international system and the values we and our allies share.”

U.S. military and intelligence leaders have put China at the top of the list of worldwide threats as a military, economic, diplomatic and strategic competitor. While NATO as a whole has acknowledged the strategic challenge from China, not every member state shares the assessment or agrees on how to address it. …
