Biden’s order to end private prisons leaves a lot on the table

WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) — The White House described it as a first step in the administration’s criminal justice agenda but there are doubts that President Joe Biden’s executive order to phase out federal government contracts with private prisons will have much of an impact.

The order, signed Tuesday, directs the Justice Department to phase out its use of private prisons by allowing existing federal contracts to expire without renewal. It was announced as part of the administration’s whole of government approach to addressing racial inequity and injustice.

The ultimate aim, according to the president, is to end the Justice Department’s use of private prisons and address the issue of mass incarceration. …
