Lessons from the Spanish flu: Early social distancing can ‘save the economy’

WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) — Social distancing and stay-at-home orders are causing real economic pain, but easing up on the measures to slow the spread of the virus could make things even worse, according to a new study by a group of economists.

Pandemics will inevitably take a toll on the economy, wrote Federal Reserve economists Sergio Correia, Stephan Luck and MIT Sloan School professor Emil Verner. However, the history of the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic suggests that when cities take strong actions at the start of a pandemic and keep mitigation measures in place longer, they tend to do better economically after the crisis has passed. …
