WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) — The Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol left many lawmakers afraid for their safety and in recent days, there have been new demands for increased security against external and insider threats.
Nearly four weeks later, the Capitol complex is still surrounded by 8-foot non-scalable fencing topped with razor wire. Armed contingents of Capitol Police, D.C. Metropolitan Police and members of the National Guard hold a perimeter on the outskirts of the Senate and House office buildings, more than a block away from the Capitol.
The heightened security posture comes amid official reports warning of increased chatter about killing lawmakers or attacking them outside the Capitol. A Department of Homeland Security threat assessment released last week warned that domestic violent extremists may be emboldened by the Jan. 6 attack “to target elected officials and government facilities.” …
