Coronavirus threatens to double world hunger; UN warns of ‘biblical’ famines

WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) — The number of people suffering from hunger around the world is expected to double due to the economic shocks of the coronavirus pandemic, according to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

According to new projections, 265 million people could face acute food insecurity in 2020. That figure is up from 135 million people in 2019.

If steps are not taken to provide global relief, the world could be facing “famines of biblical proportions within a short few months,” WFP Executive Director David Beasley warned members of the U.N. Security Council. “In a worst-case scenario, we could be looking at famine in about three dozen countries.” …
