Press Release: Lamar Jackson, Teddy Bridgewater Host Louisville Wellness Day

For Immediate Release: April 26, 2022

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — University of Louisville alumni Lamar Jackson and Teddy Bridgewater are coming home to host the inaugural Derby City Reunion Weekend, Saturday, April 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center. The two NFL quarterbacks are inviting Louisville residents to bring their families to participate in this health and wellness celebration.

Local organizations, community leaders and professional athletes will be on-site to drive home the importance of living an active, healthy lifestyle. Adults can get free health care screenings and enjoy an uplifting afternoon with music, friends and neighbors. Youth can participate in games, fitness challenges and learn fun ways to stay active outside of school.

“I’m excited to return to Louisville,” said Bridgewater, quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. “The city and the people have supported me a lot during my career. I wanted to say thank you with this event encouraging kids and families to live their best lives.”

An invitation-only awards ceremony will be held Friday, April 29, to recognize Derby City MVPs who exemplify corporate citizenry, individual philanthropy and outstanding nonprofit work. More than two dozen vendors are scheduled to attend the Saturday Derby City Wellness Day. They will provide information about healthy eating and exercise, offer on-site wellness exams and vouchers for free youth sports physicals.

“It’s extremely rewarding to collaborate with these players who have been committed to making this happen for more than two years,” said Dexter Santos, event organizer and vice president of player services at the NFL Players Association. “Our hope is that we can establish this as an annual event that benefits Louisville youth and families and allows other iconic figures with special ties to the city to provide something of value that positively impacts the community.”

The Derby City Reunion Weekend was put on hold for two years because of the pandemic. During that time, nearly 1 in 5 Americans delayed health care. Physical activity decreased among youth and adults. Many people skipped recommended medical tests. By hosting this event, organizers hope to encourage residents to be proactive about their health by helping them access preventive care to live longer healthier lives.

The Derby City Reunion Weekend is presented by Liberty Financial and sponsored by Prüvit, Limestone Title & Escrow, Planet Fitness, Metro United Way and the Rajon Rondo Foundation. The event was made possible with the support of the Forever Dreamers Foundation, Be the Bridge Foundation, the T.E.A.M. Elam Foundation, Louisville Parks and Recreation, the Louisville Thoroughbred Society and The Cargina Group.
